Exercise Challenge Week 1 -- I won (and so did Chelsey)

So, as Chelsey pointed out last week, we decided to turn our exercise/weight-loss efforts into a competition. Long story short, the one who exercises the most during a given week gets to make the other one watch a movie that they wouldn't necessarily want to see. Chelsey also included some complaints about the possibility having to see Alien or "Mystery Science Theater 3000," but I'm not in the mood to repeat her blaspheme.

Well, week one ended today. While Chelsey took an early two-days-to-one lead, I rallied back and tied it at 4-4 by week's end. Then, in a Machivellian display of strategic fortitude, I exercised this morning -- yes, on a Saturday -- in an effort to put me over the top and to finally get a chance to watch my wife's eyes light up with wonder and amusement as she saw Shaun of the Dead for the very first time. Sadly, despite my ninja-like efforts, I was rebuffed as Chelsey also fought through the Saturday-morning grogginess to tie the score at 5-5.

That's right, we both worked out five times this week. While I know that I should be a little proud of our newly-found work ethic, there's no joy in Mudville today.* My discouragement with this process is twofold. First, I'm still a fat slob. While there's been a definite uptick in the exercise department and I'm enjoying some of the benefits of my new endorphin habit, my daily trip to the scale has rendered less than optimal results. In fact, I'd say there's been no results. Of course, that's probably not entirely accurate. The scale did light up with a number every morning. It's just that that number hasn't really gotten any lower. I know, I know -- time, patience and all that jazz. But, in the past, weight loss has come relatively easy for me once I decide to go after it. This time not so much. Guess I'm old.

The second source of my sadness is...IT WAS A FREAKIN' TIE! What am I supposed to do with that? How should we resolve a tie in this little competition? We never went over that when we established the ground rules. Should we arm wrestle to decide the ultimate winner? Should Chelsey have to watch the first half of Blade Runner? Yeah...she didn't agree to either of those options.

So, I'll ask you, our faithful readership. What should we do? How should a tie be resolved? Seriously, enquiring minds want to know.**

*That's right, beyortches, I just dropped a "Casey at the Bat" reference.

**I wanna know!

Ooh, whenever Bryan pulls out "Casey at the Bat", look out, he means business.

I know a tie is frustrating, but good job, guys! Don't be bummed if you don't lose weight in the first week... or even two weeks. The biggest way to lose weight isn't exercise, it's dieting. Of course, exercising is great for your health, but dieting is where you'll see the weight loss the most.

I've seen people exercise their butts off and stay the same weight or even gain it. I've also seen people not exercise at all, but watch their calories and fat and the pounds fall off. Our bassist, Jamie, went on Weight Watchers, but I don't think he was exercising much. He was shrinking pretty fast.

This is kind of a boring way to decide a tie, but you could just switch off in deciding whenever there is a tie...I'm assuming there may be others. More exciting would be a no-holds-barred exercise-off. Whoever is left standing at the end picks the movie.

On another note, is "Blade Runner" one of the movies that Chelsey is uninterested in. Because Chels, I've got to side with Bryan on this one. I'm not a sci-fi/post-apocalyptic film lover at all, but Neal pleaded with me to watch "Blade Runner" and I was seriously impressed. It is a beautiful movie, haunting and thought-provoking. Sort of a literary movie with some subtle allusions and metaphors. Plus, Harrison Ford -- that's just a great combo.

I sat it just carries over to next week. So the winner of next week gets to decide 2 movies!

If you tie, you should both watch a movie neither of you want to see, like Princess Diaries, or Cabin Boy.

If there is a tie...then I get to pick. I think that sounds fair.
