This morning during our drive into work, Chelsey and I heard a radio interview with Steve Almond who wrote this book. During the discussion he was talking about the song "Add it Up" by the Violent Femmes. That's a pretty decent tune. But, the discussion of the Violent Femmes immediately made me think of this song.
Sorry, I couldn't find a YouTube video with just the normal version of the song.
When most people think about the Violent Femmes, they think about "Blister in the Sun," which, in my opinion, is unfortunate. They've more or less become a forgotten band except for that one song...and it's not even close to being their best song. My theory is that the opening riff to "Blister in the Sun" is really easy to play on the guitar, so dorky college-aged d-bags who want to impress chicks with their non-existent guitar skills have perpetuated the misconception that people actually like that song more than the band's other far superior contributions.
But that's just me.
I have to admit that, when I think of the Violent Femmes, the first song that usually comes to mind is "American Music." In fact, I just downloaded on Rock Band and played it with the wife a few weeks back.
But, due to the fact that, for the last half hour, I've been singing "Kiss Off" in my head, a song that I haven't heard of or thought about in years, it becomes a noteworthy addition to the Weird Songs in my Head anthology.
Good night and good luck.
